Abstract
Preeclampsia is a state of so called chronic disseminated intravascular coagulation in which pathologic adaptation of the hemostatic mechanisms extends outside the uterus involving other organs, especially the kidney. In this study, tissue
plasminogen
activator(tPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1(PAI-I) were evaluated for the clinical usefulness in the early prediction of preeclampsia. Antigen levels of tPA and PAI-I were assayed by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay in the plasma of 41
normal
pregnant women, 8 preeclamptic pregnant women and 25 other complicated pregnant women. Plasma tPA levels (mean¡¾SD) were significantly higher in the preeclamptic group(21.8¡¾8.5ng/mL) than in normal pregnant and other complicated pregnant
group(9.4¡¾4.5
ng/mL, 6.4¡¾3.4 ng/mL, respectively) (p=0.0001). Plasma PAI-I levels were also significantly higher in the preeclamptic group (79.3¡¾23.5 ng/mL) than in other two groups(p=0.0107). These results suggest that measurement of antigen levels of tPA
or
PAI-I
may be useful as the early predictors of the subsequent development of preeclampsia.
